Central Falls, RI – On Sunday, January 18, 2015, at 3:00 PM. in Central Falls City Hall Council Chambers, Mayor James Diossa will swear in eight Central Falls High School students as part of the city’s second Central Falls Mayor’s Youth Council.
“I’m excited to continue to provide an opportunity for the youth of the community to have an impact on the city’s future,” said Mayor Diossa. “The Central Falls Mayor’s Youth Council will have direct access to my office to discuss their ideas about improving education, to address the concerns of our youth in our city, and to prepare to be the civic and community leaders of tomorrow. It will be great to build upon the work that the prior Youth Council was able to do. Keeping our youth civically engaged is crucial to the future success of the city."
Students will be sworn in, pinned and be presented with Mayoral Citations at this Sunday’s ceremony. Before the ceremony, they will meet with the Mayor to review their goals as the city’s second Mayor’s Youth Council. They will meet twice monthly with Mayor Diossa and City Hall directors of Planning and Economic Development and Parks and Recreation. Students will also receive academic credit.
This year’s class of Mayor’s Youth Council Members are: Alejandra Ramirez, Angel Mendez Rivera, Arneze Peters, Kaiasia Boyer, Lesley McBurney, Ousseynou Seck, Sebastian Zuleta, and Laura Cuevas. Central Falls High School teachers, Ron Thompson and Elizabeth Ochs, will serve are advisers to the students.
